Panagbenga Festival
Baguio City is once again in full bloom with the Panagbenga Festival.
The festival name, bearing Malaya-Polynesian roots, means “season of blooming” and pays tribute to the city’s abundant flowers. The month-long flower festival began as a way to rise up from the devastation of the 1990 Luzon earthquake. Today, not only has the Panagbenga Festival helped boost the economy through tourism, it has also become a way for the younger generation of indigenous people to rediscover their culture’s old traditions.
The Panagbenga Festival begins as early as February 1, and culminates with flower covered float parades, and street dances inspired by the Ibaloi dance called the Bendian. This year’s festival will have the Grand Street Parade on March 2, Saturday, and the Grand Float Parade the day after, on March 3, Sunday.
