More Nominees

This year, the Grammys are taking a step towards broader inclusivity, with as many as eight nominees – from the previous five – considered for the four major categories – Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist. This means a lot more talented musicians from various genres had a chance to be acknowledged for their artistry.

Hip hop dominates this year’s Grammys, with Kendrick Lamar and Drake topping the overall list of nominations, with eight and seven respectively. Producer Brandi Carlile is this year’s most nominated woman at the Grammys (she scored six) as other top female artists like Cardi B, Lady Gaga, H.E.R., and Maren Morris follow suit with five nominations each.

In fact, female artists dominate the overall list of nominees – a stark difference compared to the 2018 list of Grammy nominees – with six out of eight nominees for Best New Artist being female artists, including H.E.R., Dua Lipa, Chloe x Halle, Bebe Rexha, Jorja Smith, and Margo Price. Similarly, five out eight nominees for Album of the Year are women: H.E.R., Cardi B, Brandi Carlile, Kacey Musgraves, and Janelle Monae.
